Old Sails Get a Second Life at Sea Bags
In a small workshop on the working waterfront of Portland, Maine, a small but dedicated team of sail cutters, seamstresses, stitchers, and business woman, craft by hand and market, one of a kind bags and home accessories made from recycled sails. Sea Bags was started in 2000 by Hannah Kubiak, and is now co-owned and operated by Hannah and her business partner, Beth Shissler.
Their products includes tote bags, handbags, wine bags, custom bags, placemats, log carriers and pillow covers, and each piece is made from 100% recycled materials. The old sails come from all over the world and are often traded in exchange for a bag. Sea Bags makes about 2,000 pieces per month. At this time, they have retail stores in Freeport and Portland Maine, but through partnerships with national retailers, have gained wide exposure as a sustainable business with a focus on quality and social responsibility.
