Spring Tease: Blossom Kite Festival, Washington, DC.
For 44 years the Smithsonian has hosted an annual spring kite extravaganza on the National Mall during the city’s celebrated Cherry Blossom Festival. The kite festival was founded in 1967 by aviation pioneer Paul E. Garber (who also founded the National Air & Space Museum) and features kite fliers from across the United States and the world. One of the celebrated events at the festival is the handmade kite competition – kites must be made and flown by the kite maker to be eligible for awards that include the most artistic, best craftsmanship, and most humorous. This year, for the first time, the kite festival will be produced by the Cherry Blossom Festival and will be held on March 27, 2011 from 10 AM to 4 PM on the grounds of the Washington Monument.
